Chuck's Seafood

Chuck’s Seafood nets big benefits from small-town banking

Much like the waves of the ocean, customers roll in and out of Chuck’s Seafood daily. They come for the high-quality halibut, Albacore tuna, Chinook salmon, oysters and Dungeness crab that they’ve come to expect from this this local fish market, right on the bay in Charleston.

Serving local residents and tourists alike, Heath Hampel co-owns the business with his two brothers and believes that no matter how big a business gets, you can’t sacrifice excellence. It’s why, even though they do own their own commercial canning and processing for suppliers who serve major retail giants, they still shuck their own oysters and use an old-fashioned smokehouse, fired with native Alder wood.

Knowing you should never abandon high standards for commercial success is why Heath trusts Oregon Pacific Bank for his financial needs. Our shared values of supporting the local community by providing a service that goes above and beyond the competition makes us a great team.

“The best part about Oregon Pacific Bank is the friendly and helpful staff,” Heath says. “It’s really what makes them stand out from other banks. They care about and understand the hard work that we put into our business.”

Chuck’s Seafood was founded by Chuck and Alberta McGeorge in 1953 as a retail fish market, smokehouse and cannery, serving sports fisherman. In 1980, Jack and Diana Hampel bought the business, which is now run by Heath and his brothers.

At Oregon Pacific Bank, we are proud to work with a family-owned business that is dedicated to quality and to the Charleston and the greater Coos Bay community. The next time you’re in Charleston, be sure to stop by and see Heath and ask him what’s in, fresh from the sea.

“Even though we are small, we offer everything the large banks offer and more.”

Justin Miller identified a need in his community and resolved to fill the gap. He wanted his son and other youth to have the opportunity to play organized sports, which Justin enjoyed growing up, so he helped launch youth football and track teams to give kids a chance to participate.

“The first year, we had 30-35 kids come out for track,” Justin says. “It’s all volunteers who put it together. It’s been fun.”

Having the opportunity to make an impact and get involved in his community are some of the many reasons Justin enjoys living in Myrtle Point, which he has called home all his life. Today, he works as an Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at our Coos Bay branch. He joined OPB around 2011, after spending five years at another banking institution.

“I’ve always been interested in finance,” Justin says. “I like being at a small community bank. We get to know all our clients personally. We greet you by your first name.”

That kind of familiarity has benefits, he says. “We know you, know everything about your business. We help clients achieve their goals.”
